Merry Christmas

Hello friends and family!  Merry Christmas to you all.  As I had some time to myself last night I was pondering the meaning of Christmas.  The meaning at worst is to fork over all of your cash and add a heaping pile of debt to your credit cards so you can fill your house and your life with more meaningless junk, and at best the meaning is to spend time with family and friends.

Is anything else thinking that there must be something more there?  Did you know that there are more suicides and clinical cases of depression etc. during the holidays than any other time of the year?  No matter what shiny, happy spin you put on it that stuff will never be enough to fill our deepest longings.  Possessions will eventually lose their appeal or wear out, people will let you down... no earthly thing will ever be enough to fulfill us as humans who have been given the Spirit of God.

Something in us longs for the eternal.  For a love that is deeper than what can be found on earth.

As I was thinking about the birth of Christ one word came to mind... hope.  The social, economic and moral situation at the time of Jesus' birth was similar to the world we are living in today.  Then God sent His son, a savior for the world.  A bridge between the darkness of a sin filled and empty world and the one true and living God.

This, of course, has been a Karaoke filled Christmas and as I was singing the words to an old favorite song I was reminded why I like it so much.  I think this song written by Placide Cappeau de Roquemaure in 1847 perfectly describes the meaning of Christmas.

O Holy Night
O Holy Night! The stars are brightly shining,
It is the night of the dear Saviour's birth.
Long lay the world in sin and error pining.
Till He appeared and the Spirit felt its worth.
A thrill of hope the weary world rejoices,
For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn.
Fall on your knees! Oh, hear the angel voices!
O night divine, the night when Christ was born;
O night, O Holy Night , O night divine!
O night, O Holy Night , O night divine!

Led by the light of faith serenely beaming,
With glowing hearts by His cradle we stand.
O'er the world a star is sweetly gleaming,
Now come the wisemen from out of the Orient land.
The King of kings lay thus lowly manger;
In all our trials born to be our friends.
He knows our need, our weakness is no stranger,
Behold your King! Before him lowly bend!
Behold your King! Before him lowly bend!

Truly He taught us to love one another,
His law is love and His gospel is peace.
Chains he shall break, for the slave is our brother.
And in his name all oppression shall cease.
Sweet hymns of joy in grateful chorus raise we,
With all our hearts we praise His holy name.
Christ is the Lord! Then ever, ever praise we,
His power and glory ever more proclaim!
His power and glory ever more proclaim!
